How to Wash Cashmere

Wondering how to wash cashmere and wool sweaters, scarves and more? We will show you a couple of easy tips and tricks to help you keep them looking their very best for years to come.

Cashmere Hand Wash How To –

Use a mild detergent made for hand washing such as Woolite® Delicates, and remember that temperature is critical. Be sure to avoid heat at all costs.

However, if the garment is excessively soiled you can soak it. We recommend turning it inside out and letting it soak for 5 minutes (but not more than 30) in warm water. Then, hand wash gently, rinse in cold water and squeeze (never wring or twist) to remove excess water. Re-shape and lay flat to dry.

Stain Removal for Cashmere and Wool –

To remove dried and set stains from cashmere or wool, you’ll want to use something specifically for this purpose such as the Stain Solution shown here.

Whatever solution you try, it can be poured directly onto the the stain for tough stains, and then rubbed gently in. Beware, rubbing too hard could cause the fabric to pill. Gentle is the key. After pre-treating, hand wash as usual.

Always follow the bottle’s instructions when using any laundry products. Keep in mind that, too much detergent can also be harmful to the life of your fabric.

Day to Day Care Tips To Extend Fabric Life

A lint roller can help to remove fuzz and dust between washes, and you may also gently use a sweater comb to control pills. Expert Tip, don’t wash after every use. If you get a stain on it, between washes, feel free to spot treat it. After wearing, air the garment out for 24 hours before returning it to storage. This allows any excess body moisture to dry.

How to store a cashmere garment or sweater

Proper Cashmere Storage –

Wash the garment before storing for the season, and store it in a canvas container to help prevent any moisture buildup. Avoid cardboard and plastic if possible, due to their moisture gathering capabilities.

Moths are the natural enemy of wool. So, to help prevent moths, you can try to use cedar balls or shavings. When using these, be sure they do not come into contact with the garment.

You can use a small amount of fabric softener for your washes, but when washing for storage, do not use fabric softener. The ingredients in the product could cause yellowing over time.
