Using the Laundromat to Clean Those Winter Coats

Once the cold weather hits, it soon becomes a priority to dig out our winter clothing and this includes our winter coats. Even though they may have been cleaned prior to putting them away for the summer, chances are you are going to want to clean them again, so they’re fresh for the coming months. The question is whether you will be able to do this at your quality Laundromat, like our Laundromat Hyattsville, MD facility or not.

It used to be that when it came to heavier clothing like this there were no options on whether you could wash and dry them yourselves. It usually meant taking them to the dry cleaners and this could be a costly event. Now, with so many new materials and fillings on the market, it has become much easier to keep these winter jackets and coats in better condition.

The one thing you’re going to want to do for sure is to check the label on your winter coat to see if it is machine washable. If so, using your local Laundromat to do this is ideal. Most of this type of clothing is quite bulky and requires a bigger machine to clean and dry it properly. It is not a good idea to try and crunch in heavier clothing into a small machine. What can happen is the materials will separate in the lining and could ball up.

Also, you want to make sure that if you are washing this item, you keep it separate from your other clothing. In most cases, the dye is set in the materials because it is exposed to the adverse weather and color running is not likely going to be an issue. You still don’t want to take the chance, however, so that’s why it’s a good idea to wash it on its own.

You may even want to use the gentle cycle as this is a quality piece of clothing and you don’t want to subject it to anything that’s too harsh. When drying, check the label once again to see that it is able to be dried in a machine and there is no demand for air drying. Dry it on a lower cycle as it is worth taking a little more time for the drying and making sure that the item is not going to shrink.

One thing that many people forget to think about is checking the pockets and this is important as the coat has been put away for a while. It’s not hard to forget about some items that could end up going through the washer.
Because it is going to take a little longer to do this type of laundry when you go to your Laundromat, plan for any little extra time, so you can get the job done right.
