Getting Your Winter Sports Gear Ready at the Laundromat

There is always an excitement when the winter sports season is upon us and the young ones can’t wait to get their sports clothes out of storage to see what fits. This also means a little extra work and, perhaps, a trip to a quality Laundromat, like our Laundromat Hyattsville, MD location.

It all begins with getting all the sports gear out of storage and sorting what can and cannot be laundered in the normal manner. Many times, a lot of the items can be washed and dried, but need a little extra care. The first thing to remember is that these items are normally quite bulky and the washing machines should not be overloaded. Otherwise, the items are not going to get as clean as they should be.

Inspect each of the items carefully and look for liners that can be removed, so they can be gently washed. Take extra caution with these items by washing them in cold water and then on a low dryer setting. Check that the item can be put in the dryer as some of these types of items could melt if exposed to heat. It is important to be gentle with the cleaning, so they don’t shrink to the point where you will not be able to install them back into the original item.

Some sports items are made of materials that tend to fray if they are not washed carefully. In these cases, you may want to consider hand washing them.

For items that have bulky padding, you may want to put a few tennis balls in with the wash and when drying them as well. This helps to keep the padding from separating.

While it is great to have a quality Laundromat to go to, be respectful in knowing that some sports clothing are not appropriate for standard washing and could damage the machines.

A careful inspection of each sports clothing item will give you a good idea of whether you will be able to take them off to your local Laundromat for cleaning, while getting ready to enjoy another sports year with the kids.
